About

Now based in Belfast, Tom’s work is shaped by a blend of cultural influences. Elements of traditional Chinese ink painting sit alongside a more expressive Western abstraction, reflecting his own experience of living between cultures and identities. The city’s creative energy and complex history continue to inform his approach, adding depth and contrast to his visual language.
Tom Mu grew up drawn to painting from an early age. Creating became both an escape and a way of finding control — a quiet space where he could step away from the noise and pressure of the outside world. From those early years, art was less about following rules and more about responding to what was happening internally.
Tom’s work often resonates with viewers on an emotional level, with many describing a sense of calm when spending time with his paintings. At its core, his practice is about encouraging self-expression and self-acceptance. The work holds space for uncertainty, reminding viewers that whatever they are feeling is valid, and that there is no single way to exist or create.
At an early stage in his career, Tom has recently received support from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and has begun exhibiting his work locally. He is currently showing at The Yard Gallery in Holywood, marking an important step in the development of his practice as he continues to explore, experiment, and grow.
